Based on the growing recognition of the widespread prevalence of mental illness in society, and the newly acknowledged need for improved mental health services among the college-aged population, U Bring Change 2 Mind (UBC2M) aims to couple a long-standing interest in the causes and consequences of mental illness, a strong social scientific research base, and the energy, talent, and open orientation of the Millennial and GenZ generations to pioneer a student-run and staff-supported organization that strives to improve mental health resources and outcomes for students at Indiana University and across the country. In partnership with The College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Informatics and Computing, and the School of Public Health, U Bring Change 2 Mind has piloted the creation of The College Toolbox program – a 4-year intervention and assessment research project whose goal is to develop, pilot-test, and evaluate the efficacy of anti-stigma program materials on a college campus. U Bring Change 2 Mind has also assembled a board of student directors that work in tandem with staff and researchers to develop events, programs, and case-competitions on campus that focus on mental illness education and starting conversations about the stigma surrounding mental illness in attempt to create and measure the changing culture towards mental illness on a college campus.
U Bring Change 2 Mind aims to complete The College Toolbox project in 2018, at which point they will package the program with the help of the national anti-stigma organization founded by actress Glenn Close, Bring Change 2 Mind to distribute to colleges across the country. The guidebook to be created will be an empirically based program guide to help other universities start their own U Bring Change 2 Mind clubs on campus to help further our primary goal of eliminating the stigma surrounding mental illness on college campuses. U Bring Change 2 Mind will also function to support Indiana University’s Culture of Care initiative and will continue to aim to become a leader in mental health advocacy on campus for years to come.
